  • Customer Security Advisory: Critical F5/NGINX Out-of-Band Vulnerabilities

Notice, nothing marked broken · Started 22 Oct, 21:08 · Looking into it

Akamai is aware of the recently published F5/NGINX vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-15176, CVE-2026-97205, and CVE-2026-93479), and our teams are actively investigating their potential impact across our platform and infrastructure. F5 has released out-of-band security patches addressing three critical severity vulnerabilities in NGINX Open Source and NGINX Plus. These vulnerabilities may allow unauthenticated attackers to trigger heap buffer overflows, which could cause a denial of service or potential remote code execution if ASLR is bypassed. If you are running a vulnerable version of NGINX Open Source or NGINX Plus on a Linode instance, we recommend following guidance from F5/NGINX and applying…

  • (PwnEscape) Guest-to-Host KVM Escape [CVE-2026-99999]

Notice, nothing marked broken · Started 15 Oct, 18:27 · Cause found

Akamai has completed patching Compute hypervisors for the known vulnerabilities related to CVE-2026-99999, also referred to as “PwnEscape”, and we have not identified any exploitation on the Akamai platform. We recommend that customers upgrade Linode guest VMs using kernels from upstream OS vendors as those become available, especially for cases where less trusted workloads are being run within containers or nested virtualization. We are in the process of preparing images containing fixes from upstream vendors.

How it compares

With 3 other cloud platforms over the last 90 days, by what each reports on its own status page.

  • Problems reportedMore than most21 here, typical 4. It reports problems openly
  • UptimeHigher than most100% here, typical 99.83%

Openness

How well Linode keeps people informed when something goes wrong.

  • Reports problems openly: 21 posted on its status page in the last 90 days
  • Shows 12 separate parts, so you can see exactly what's affected
  • Keeps people updated: 4.1 updates per problem on average

Posting small problems openly is a good sign. An app that reports more problems isn't necessarily less reliable than one that reports fewer.

Guide

Linode down? The answer is at the top of this page. Appys checks Linode’s official status page as you arrive, so what you see is never more than a few minutes old. Below is what to check on your side, what to do while you wait, and how to hear when it’s fixed.

Linode down for everyone, or just you?

If the status above says Linode is working normally but it isn’t working for you, the problem is most likely closer to home. Press Is it just me? at the top of the page: your own device and our server both try to reach linode.com, and the answer tells you which side the problem is on.

Then try these quick checks:

  • Open Linode on another network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.
  • Try a different browser or a private window, to rule out an old cache or a browser extension.
  • Restart your router if lots of websites are slow, not just this one.
  • Make sure your device’s date and time are set automatically: a wrong clock can stop secure connections.
  • If you build on it, look at your own logs and dashboard too: an error from your own server or code can look just like an outage.

Linode down? What to do while you wait

  • Check which part is affected. Linode splits its status into 12 parts, listed under What Linode reports on above, so a problem in one may not touch the ones you use.
  • Hold off on big changes. Deploys, settings changes and DNS edits made during an outage can fail halfway and be hard to undo.
  • Retry rather than rebuild. Most outages are fixed on the provider’s side, so reinstalling or reconfiguring rarely helps.
  • Tell your own users. A short note saying the problem is with Linode, with a link to this page, saves a pile of support messages.
  • Keep this page open: the status changes by itself when Linode posts the fix, so there’s no need to keep refreshing.

If it drags on and the work can’t wait, the alternatives near the top of this page are other cloud platforms that are working right now.

Why apps like Linode go down

Most outages at developer platforms start with a change: a new release, a configuration change or a network route that goes wrong. Even big outages are often partial, hitting one feature, one region or one group of users rather than everyone. That’s why Linode can work fine for you while its status page reports a problem, or the other way round.

How Appys checks Linode

Every status on this page comes from Linode’s official status page, where Linode’s own team posts problems and fixes. Its status page covers 12 parts: Linode.com, Cloud Manager and API, Hosted DNS Service, Longview, Managed Databases, Regions, Block Storage, NodeBalancers, Backups, Object Storage, Linode Kubernetes Engine and Metadata Service. Appys reads it whenever someone opens this page and regularly in between, keeps a record of every problem it posts and works out the 90-day uptime from that record. We never change what Linode says, and nobody can pay to change a status or a record.

A quiet status page doesn’t always mean nothing is wrong: some companies post small problems late, or not at all. That’s why this page also shows how openly Linode reports its problems.

How long do Linode outages last?

It depends on what broke. Small problems are often fixed within the hour, while a big outage can take most of a day. The history above lists every problem Linode has posted recently, when each one started and how long it took to fix, so you can see what’s normal for Linode rather than guessing. While a problem is open, the latest update from Linode is shown at the top of this page.
