Is Tailscale Down?

Is Tailscale down right now? We check Tailscale's official status page as you arrive, then show any outage, its 90-day uptime and what to use instead.

Tailscale reports a problem.

  • Funnel hostnames not resolving in public DNS

Started 27 Oct, 14:16 · Looking into it

We are currently investigating reports of Funnel hostnames not resolving publicly. Affected devices show Funnel as enabled and have valid HTTPS certificates, but public DNS lookups for the device's ts.net name return no address, and external access does not work. In some cases the records appear after a delay. Connectivity from within the tailnet, including MagicDNS and Serve, is not affected.

From Tailscale's official status page, read again when you open this page. This page updates by itself.

How it compares

With 7 other apps in Passwords, VPNs and sign-in over the last 90 days, by what each reports on its own status page.

Openness

How well Tailscale keeps people informed when something goes wrong.

  • Reports problems openly: 19 posted on its status page in the last 90 days
  • Shows 18 separate parts, so you can see exactly what's affected
  • Keeps people updated: 3.8 updates per problem on average

Posting small problems openly is a good sign. An app that reports more problems isn't necessarily less reliable than one that reports fewer.

Guide

Tailscale down? The answer is at the top of this page. Appys checks Tailscale’s official status page as you arrive, so what you see is never more than a few minutes old. Below is what to check on your side, what to do while you wait, and how to hear when it’s fixed.

Tailscale down for everyone, or just you?

If the status above says Tailscale is working normally but it isn’t working for you, the problem is most likely closer to home. Press Is it just me? at the top of the page: your own device and our server both try to reach tailscale.com, and the answer tells you which side the problem is on.

Then try these quick checks:

  • Open Tailscale on another network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi.
  • Try a different browser or a private window, to rule out an old cache or a browser extension.
  • Restart your router if lots of websites are slow, not just this one.
  • Make sure your device’s date and time are set automatically: a wrong clock can stop secure connections.
  • See whether the app still opens on your device: password managers usually keep a copy on it, and VPNs can switch to another server.

Tailscale down? What to do while you wait

  • Check which part is affected. Tailscale splits its status into 18 parts, listed under What Tailscale reports on above, so a problem in one may not touch the ones you use.
  • Don’t change your main password or reset your account during an outage.
  • If you’re locked out, use the copy on your device or your saved recovery details if you have them.
  • For a VPN, try another server or location before deciding the whole service is down.
  • Keep this page open: the status changes by itself when Tailscale posts the fix, so there’s no need to keep refreshing.

If it drags on and the work can’t wait, the alternatives near the top of this page are other VPNs that are working right now.

Why apps like Tailscale go down

Security and sign-in services usually go down after updates or when part of their network fails. Because so much depends on them, even short outages can lock people out of other apps. Even big outages are often partial, hitting one feature, one region or one group of users rather than everyone. That’s why Tailscale can work fine for you while its status page reports a problem, or the other way round.

How Appys checks Tailscale

Every status on this page comes from Tailscale’s official status page, where Tailscale’s own team posts problems and fixes. Its status page covers 18 parts: Admin console (console.tailscale.com), API (api.tailscale.com), Coordination service, DERP relay servers, Certificates, Mullvad exit nodes, Homepage and Documentation (tailscale.com), Package server (pkgs.tailscale.com), Funnel, Aperture, Tailscale Support, API (US) and more. Appys reads it whenever someone opens this page and regularly in between, keeps a record of every problem it posts and works out the 90-day uptime from that record. We never change what Tailscale says, and nobody can pay to change a status or a record.

A quiet status page doesn’t always mean nothing is wrong: some companies post small problems late, or not at all. That’s why this page also shows how openly Tailscale reports its problems.

How long do Tailscale outages last?

It depends on what broke. Small problems are often fixed within the hour, while a big outage can take most of a day. The history above lists every problem Tailscale has posted recently, when each one started and how long it took to fix, so you can see what’s normal for Tailscale rather than guessing. While a problem is open, the latest update from Tailscale is shown at the top of this page.
